      Abstract        Composite materials became suitable for structural applications when boron and carbon fibers emerged as commercial products in the late 1960’s.During the last 40 some years much research and development effort in Japan and the US have resulted in major impact on structures for aircraft and spacecraft.  The all-new Boeing 787, for example, is made with 50 plus percent of the structures in composites, 30 tons per plane.  The fan blades of its engines by General Electric are also composites.  This presentation will describe how the design processes of composites for aircraft structures.  Composites are now commercial products and have outstanding properties that combine high stiffness, low weight, and durability against corrosion and fatigue.  When weight or durability is important for a system composites are unmatched.  For any engineer interested in high performance structures composites should be one of his/her options.       BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH      Professor Tsai was a student at Yenching University and went to the US in 1948.  He graduated from Yale Unverisity with BE and D.Eng.  He started his work in composite materials in the early 1960’s.  Prior to Stanford University he worked for Ford, Washington University, and the US Air Force Research Laboratories.  He served 25 years as the first Editor-in-Chief of Journal Composite Materials.  He is best known for his books on composites and Tsai-Wu failure criterion.  He is a member of the US Academy of Engineering.  He has been an adjoint professor at Beijing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics. He is often introduced as the father of composites.

Tsai教师毕业于United States清华高校,壹玖伍叁年, 一九六一年个别获博士和大学子学位,之后长期在U.S.A.新罕布什尔香槟分校大学航空宇航系充任教职。Tsai教授是国际复合质地力学界的高尚,在一九七零年她和老品牌力学家宝马X5. Hill同盟,提议了Tsai-Hill(蔡-Hill卡塔尔国强度法则,对复合材质力学的强度理论发生了深入影响,沿用到现在。1972年又建议了张量方式的Tsai-Wu(蔡-吴卡塔尔国强度理论。Tsai-Wu理论的数值总计与试验切合的一定好。此外,Tsai教授在复合材质各向异性非线性变形品质的剖析方面,也做了开创性的钻研职业。

Professor Mark Bradford is currently a Scientia Professor at UNSW Sydney, Federation Fellow and Professor of Civil Engineering, and is the Director of Research and Founding Director of the Centre for Infrastructure Engineering and Safety within UNSW Sydney’s School of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He currently chairs the National Committee on Mechanical and Engineering Sciences of the Australian Academy of Science. He is an internationally recognized researcher in the field of structural engineering, and has published some 15 books in various editions and over 600 scientific papers in book chapters, journals and conferences. He serves on the editorial boards of 14 journals, and on four Standards Australia committees in structural engineering. The work reported in the presentation was undertaken when Prof Bradford held a prestigious Australian Laureate Fellowship, which was preceded by an Australian Federation Fellowship in which he undertook research on steel and composite structures subjected to fire loading. His work on deconstructable composite buildings earned him the prize for “Excellence in Engineering & Information and Communications Technology” in the New South Wales Premier’s Prizes for Science and Engineering in 2015. In recent years, Prof. Bradford has been awarded the Shortridge Hardesty Award of the ASCE, the John Connell Medal of Engineers Australia and bestowed Distinguished Membership of the ASCE; the first Australian structural engineer so honoured in the 165-year history of the ASCE.

An important aspect of designing sustainable building structures is that they should be deconstructable at the end of their service life, to enable the reuse of materials and to eliminate the energy associated with their demolition and disposal. In steel-framed buildings with concrete flooring systems attached with headed stud steel shear connectors, deconstruction is problematic because of the embedment of the headed studs into the cast in situ concrete slab.

The main presentation describes an alternate system of construction, in which semi-rigid steel frames are constructed using bolted joints, either to I-section columns or to concrete-filled steel tubes using flush end plate connections. The concrete floor is made from slabs of precast geopolymer concrete, connected to the steel beams by friction-grip high-strength steel bolts in pre-drilled clearance holes. The tensioning of the friction-grip bolts is shown to provide substantial interface friction, thereby providing the beams with full shear interaction in the service load range of response. The experimental study, which confirms the deconstructability of the system, is used to calibrate finite element analysis and to formulate design proposals.

A shorter subsequent presentation introduces work nearing completion on steel-timber composite buildings, which have even greater attributes in terms of the carbon footprint of a building, as plantation timber sequestrates carbon dioxide during its growth. This study also demonstrates that such a structural system is robust and ductile.
